A Day in Melbourne CBD
Melbourne is the capital of Victoria, and Melbourne Central Business District is the heart of Melbourne. The CBD offers more than a hundred attractions, and it is not easy to navigate for those seeking the true essence of Melbourne.
Here’s my guide to spending one day in the city centre of Melbourne.
Here’s my guide to spending one day in the city centre of Melbourne.
START WITH BRUNCH
Brunch is a big thing in Melbourne, so you will find many cafes and restaurants around the CBD serving it up every day of the week. Check out The Urban List to get the best breakfast in Melbourne.
START YOUR DAY AT FLINDERS STREET STATION
Flinders Street Station is one of Melbourne’s iconic buildings. It certainly stands out in terms of architecture, and its central location makes it an ideal meeting spot and starting point for your one day in Melbourne.
LANEWAYS AND STREET ART OH MY!!!
From Flinders Station head to the most famous street-art filled lane, Hoiser Lane to check out some very colourful and impressive artwork (not graffiti). The cobblestoned laneway is arguably the central point of the city’s street art scene. Spend a long while checking out every little bit of this overflowing art cluster. I also recommend checking out ACDC laneway, the street art features all kinds of musicians – both real and imagined.
RETAIL THERAPY
Looking for a little retail therapy then walk over to Bourke Street Mall where you will find all the major department stores including David Jones and Myer, as well as a tempting variety of specialist shops and independent boutiques.
However if you are looking for local designers, international brands and vintage treasures, then you’ll find it all and more on Chapel Street. A famous Melbourne shopping strip which spans from Windsor to Prahran. Take a stroll to find some hidden gems – you won’t be disappointed.
QUEEN VICTORIA MARKETS
Just over a kilometre walk from Bourke St Mall is the iconic Queen Victoria markets, a vibrant and bustling place for any foodie. Your senses will surely lead you around this colourful covered bazaar, where you can sample olives, deli meats, cheeses, fresh produce, seafood or bread and get lost in the fragrant spices as you go. They even offer a guided walking tour of the market- a must for any foodie.
COFFEE BREAK
Market Lane Coffee
A visit to Melbourne isn’t complete without a coffee from one of the best roasters in Melbourne. It’s not easy selecting the best coffee in town, thankfully, The Urban List have happily done the research for us. I enjoyed a flat white from Market Lane located in the Queen Victoria Market.
FEDERATION SQUARE
From the Queen Victoria Markets you can either walk or take the free city circle tram to Flinders Street Station. From there, cross St Kilda Road to Federation Square. It is one of the city’s most important cultural places. Enjoy the free exhibitions or simply stroll around and enjoy the surrounding views of St Paul’s Cathedral, the Yarra River and Flinders Street Station. If you are lucky enough, you can stumble upon an entertaining performance from a busker.
I thoroughly enjoyed visiting Melbourne CBD and I hope this guide help you plan your visit to Melbourne.
